Ostriv
Island viewpoint and open water. Reedbeds, shrubs, large migratory flocks.
From this point there is a wide view over open water and floating areas near the island. The water is more open here than in narrow channels, so birds often stay farther from shore, but flocks are easy to see on the horizon. Reeds and shrubs frame the bank, and on calm days the sky and cloud reflections stretch across the water.
In spring and autumn large flocks of ducks, geese and gulls pass over the lake. Grey and great egrets stand on the shallows by the island, and kingfishers and ospreys hunt above the water. In August and September migratory flocks are especially visible as birds pause on the open water before moving on. Early morning is best for watching flock movement.
Practical tips
- Most rewarding during migration, when large gatherings move over the water.
- The site is exposed and windy. Shield your face from the wind and stay in one place.
- Morning light gives the best views of flocks on the horizon.
Best season: March–May and August–November
